Shiatsu is a system of bodywork therapy that originated in Japan around 1100 AD as a blend of other forms of bodywork (the actual term “shiatsu” did not present itself until the 1900′s). Compressive forces from the therapists thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, and feet are carefully applied to a client’s body to affect tsubo or acupressure points. The points are along meridians or “energy channels” that flow throughout the body and corellate with internal organs.
Traditional Shiatsu is performed with the client fully clothed while lying or a mat on the ground.
